Despite a Christmas of colds we are back at work. For our first full week we received approval for a two-storey extension with garage and home/office to a detached house in Midhurst and approval for works to a listed Norman Shaw building with a new bespoke garage store in the gardens designed by E.W Cooke. A pre-app meeting with a local East Sussex LPA was very positive for a development on a site where the urban grain of the conservation area is very tight.
Other projects and applications are in process and a bit to early but we remain hopeful and positively engaged.

This past fortnight saw Murphy Associates work on heritage reports for a site in Lewes, East Sussex and a fire damaged listed building in Crockerhill, West Sussex; the receipt of the last of a set of three listed buildings consents for a sensitive building plus a rather surprising case involving a modern extension to a listed building which threw up unanticipated issues. We also attended Helm training in West Dean and the RTPI SE Awards (maybe one year we will see one of our collaborations). Next week we are working on an appeal for clients with much needed space to meet personal family requirements and another listed building in East Hampshire. And we await a response to the housing scheme lodged for pre-app ..... Working across three specialisms is a challenge at the best of times but brings plenty of variety to the workload and with that travel - up and down the country, across East and West Sussex, the South Downs National Park to Hampshire. Having a background in Development Management and planning law has probably been my saving 'grace' whatever the subject matter, area of property. This past few weeks we have been contending with reports relating to a fire damaged listed building now beyond repair, salvage etc; assessing significance of designated and non-designated heritage assets, writing conservation area character appraisals, lodging and negotiating on planning applications and applications to discharge conditions ... and appealing appeals! But to end the day there is nothing like trying to understand the logic of some ...
