As well as preparing planning and listed building application with all the relevant reports, we are also able to offer both 2D and 3D visualisations of your proposals. For one project we produced a series of 3D images to explore how a listed building on a tight urban site could be extended without causing harm to the heritage asset. On another we prepared images to show a client how we could change the interior of their home without extending and we even gave the owner of a redundant pig sty some room for inspired thought. Have a look at some of our images. Using the latest software we can even produce 'walk-throughs' to provide an 'experience' of the development, internally and externally.

We have been working on a scheme for new flats in a sustainable location in Brighton's popular residential area. Yes there are objections but amended plans should address those 'material' concerns! It will be a committee decision so next week will determine the future of a longstanding bespoke musical instrument provider. A 'no' means its demise. A 'yes' it's survival!!
After being successful on appeal and receiving approval of the window detailing, residents in a flatted block in the South Cliff Conservation Area of Eastbourne now finally will get new and improved Rehau Heritage Sash Windows - double glazed uPVC, protecting them from the elements and improving the quality of their homes. Lets hope the work can get underway soon!!
Building upon a previous success in gaining planning permission for a Game Farm and a new storage building in the Kent countryside, the Murphy Associates team put forward a sound business plan demonstrating a clear functional and financial need for the manager/worker to live on-site for a three-year period in order to establish his business on this new site.
On Bonfire Night it was all fireworks with opposition from the local parish council, a tense debate about the nature of the business, the site, hindsight. The justification was accept by the very firm Rural Advisor. The Head of Development Management was firm but fair in his defence of the proposal. After a good 50 minutes - the vote! Ashford Borough Council Planning Committee members voted 9-5 in favour! This decision was hugely important. We have a very happy client who now has 3 yrs to prove that his business can and will be successful! "Thanks for all your hard work!" Thats good enough for us! We also have to thank the Case Officer and DM team for their justified support. Unaware of flats not having permitted development rights, work on a ground floor extension had progressed to the point where the Enforcement Officer was alerted to the case and we were called in! Summer holidays, out of the country or not, our Associate Planner and Part II Architect prepared the submission with efficiency and speed.
And thanks to BHCC who determined this case well ahead of the statutory 8-week time-frame, allowing the owner and family to enjoy their extended home and beautifully extended kitchen with relief. Enforcement case closed! Closing statements were issued by both the Appellants and the LPA and the Public Inquiry is now closed. It will be interesting to see how the outcome of this case given that Further Environmental Information (FEI) was required as a result of the approval of the Rampion Off-Shore Wind Farm. It will now be for the Inspector to issue her decision on the 3 turbine case, unless Eric Pickles MP decides to call this one in under recovery procedures. Only time will tell!
Murphy Associates acted as the Expert Planning Witness with Philip Russell-Vick of Enplan acting as the Expert Landscape Witness with Scott Lyness of Landmark Chambers as Barrister. An unfortunate error in a decision notice when first approved meant the new owners had to re-apply for the same 'approved' LDC in order to ensure the correct description was provided. However, the LPA concerned accepted the error and agreed that no fee was payable and fast-tracked the LDC through to determination. Now the City can benefit from 12 more improved self-contained units of accommodation!
Home is a boat for some of our clients and we now can be assured that their home on the water keeps them off the land. A tricky one with difficult issues to grapple with, apart from ropes and moorings, but the subject boat - no not the one in the photo - can now stay alongside the mother ship. Took a while but the outcome was a nail-biting positive. Thinking of utilising the Green Deal initiative to make energy improvements in your Listed Building? But may not be sure how this may affect your building?
The Green Deal is a government backed scheme that allows property owners to undertake energy saving methods without an initial upfront cost. The repayments are made through your electricity bill. The energy saving options are:
If you own a Listed Building then are more issues to consider, for instance, will the improvements affect the character and appearance of the building, its historic fabric, its performance and ability to breathe and the need for Listed Building Consent. We at Murphy Associates are able to offer advice to Listed Building Owners either pre or post the Green Deal Assessment on areas of improvement as well as issues to consider. Once an assessment of the significance of the building has been carried out and the impact of the proposed Green Deal initiatives on significance, this information can form part of a Heritage Statement to accompany an application for Listed Building Consent. If you are thinking of this initiative then contact us for more advice! And two positive decisions received and three new submissions - and the holiday never started! Plus Eimear has been assisting a group to establish themselves as a heritage amenity group in her limited spare time.
